The Movie Intern & Proper Focus

The movie, Intern (2015) is a classic example of Proper Focus!

Jules, played by Anne Hathaway is an uptight millennial tech founder of a fast growing company. Unknown to her, she is assigned a senior intern, Ben age 70, played by Robert De Niro.

The two are an unlikely pairing because Jules doesn’t want an inter. After all, how could someone that old possibly help Jules?

Yet here is where the story gets interesting.

Ben remains loyal and helps out wherever he can, even doing the jobs no one else wants to do. After seeing his faithfulness, Jules begins to soften and ultimately begins relying on Ben in more significant ways. In fact, by the end of the movie, Ben plays a key role in preserving the company Jules founded.

How is this movie a poster child for Proper Focus?

Ben knew his role and and responsibility level and never once changed focus.

Although at times his expertise could have saved the day, he was content to hold his position.

Rather than show up at the job site with an air of arrogance (after all, Ben had previously overseen his former company in the exact building Jules now housed her company), he remained humble and sought to help others.

Ben didn’t break rank and even seemed to enjoy his intern role which was the secret to his success and Jules success as well.

Next time you get frustrated that you are not in a role that is as significant as you would like, remember to stay the course. Be faithful. Contribute where you can. In due time, you will move forward.

Reaching Your Destiny Requires a Symphony!

Have you noticed when you listen to certain music that your body begins to sway or your feet begin to tap? Even young children will pick up a beat and begin to dance to the surprise of their parents.

Consider an orchestra. Each movement or section of the composition is distinct and designed with its own purpose in mind. Some movements may cause you to tear, whereas other movements might compel you to clap to the beat.

The intent of music is unashamedly to invoke a response in the audience – to cause something to move within you.  And that is exactly what sound does, it causes something to move – literally!

Now consider fulfilling your destiny. Like the symphony, your intent is to cause something to happen, to cause something to move . . . to change! What are you called to move, to impact, to change?

  • Eradicate human trafficking.
  • See entire people group’s saved through you bringing the gospel message.
  • Establish a biblical model of corporate governance.
  • Educate the poor in a city or nation.
  • Design a new energy technology that will free our country from oil dependence.
  • Provide a model for growing crops that can be used in local communities.
  • Establish a “Holy-wood” as an alternative to today’s “Hollywood”.
  • Provide clean water to the poor.
  • Bring legislation for Christ-based causes.
  • Bring a Kingdom alternative to health insurance.

What about you? What do you want to move or change?

To fulfill these and other types of callings, you need a force (or vibration or sound) to move certain things out of the way and bring new things into play.  You could do it the old fashioned way and assume that the people you begin with will be the people you end up with. Or you could consider that like an orchestra with distinct movements, you will need different groups of people along the way to produce the different types of sounds necessary to cause the change you desire.

Although in history God has had his man or woman of the hour, since the time of Christ, God has sought to move through a corporate Body: His Body in the earth (Eph. 4:1-16). Hence, we need the full orchestra of instruments (His Body) to embody the sound that will accomplish His will.

Your Unique DNA

Physical science has discovered that your DNA has a unique sound!

Scientists can now isolate your DNA, identify the elements or sound frequencies that comprise its unique string, and play the sound of those elements on a computer. You are a unique instrument!

Made in the image of God and created through Christ Jesus, you have a unique Glory DNA from your heavenly Father that no one on planet Earth has ever possessed.

When you walk into a room, your sound interacts with the sounds of the others, and a compilation of songs, frequencies, vibrations, and wavelengths emerges. This new sound moves the atmosphere and reaches your Father’s ears. Together these songs become worship, an orchestra in the making.

Scripture indicates that sound is a critical factor in winning battles (David against the Philistines), taking territory (the fall of Jericho), responding to the cries of the oppressed (God delivering Israel), answering the need for justice (the persistent widow), and even calling men and women to their Heavenly purpose (the 12 disciples).

Science demonstrates that everything has sound, and the purpose of sound is to move things. In fact, sound is movement and movement is sound!  Sound is an invisible force or agent helping us to forward His purposes through our lives and fulfill our destinies!
